I am beyond thought and beyond form
I am in all things, everywhere, in all senses
I am impartial to all, neither attached nor detached
The embodiment of blissful consciousness,
I am Shiva! I am Shiva! I am Shiva!
Sri Adishankaracharya (700 – 750 AD)
PREM SHIVA HINDU DEVOTIONAL OIL
Resins and botanical extracts traditionally infused in Earth Attar and Aged Naturally
Provenance: Varanasi, North India
Prem Shiva is an ancient blend, or bouquet of precious oils consisting of many natural resins, botanical extracts and various herbs that has been prepared in honour of Lord Shiva for centuries. Shiva is the Hindu God of transformation and translates to “Auspicious One” in Sanskrit. In the Hindu philosophy of the Trimurti, the Hindu Trinity of the primary aspects of the divine, Shiva is seen as the Supreme Being, or Mahadeva.
Prem Shiva Devotional Blend consists mainly of hardy botanicals and resins such as spikenard, khas, myrrh, Indian frankincense (lobaan), cloves, botanical musk among other “secret ingredients” all infused in mitti attar (Earth Oil) over a 25 day traditional infusion process.
Although one can obtain Prem Shiva from almost any major city in India, the best quality is said to come from the city of Shiva itself: Varanasi. The tradition of making Prem Shiva oil is most alive and vibrant in Varanasi where it has been made for well over a thousand years. There are numerous recipes for Prem Shiva Oil throughout India, but Prem Shiva from the city of Varanasi is well known for its fine quality and its original, most authentic recipe.
According to folklore, Kashi, as Varanasi was once known, was founded by Shiva himself around 8,000 years ago. For this reason, it is an extremely important Hindu pilgrimage site in the country if not the world. It is one of the seven sacred cities for Hindus and Shiva’s devotees. Many Hindu scriptures, including the Rigveda, Skanda Purana, Ramayana and the Mahabharata mention the city.
Folklore aside, Varanasi is generally believed to be about 4,000 years old and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It was a commercial and industrial centre famous for its muslin cloth, silk fabrics, perfumes and religious sculptures or murtis.
Prem Shiva translates into “Love of Shiva” in Sanskrit and was said to be created by pandits or hindu priests in Shiva temples in Varanasi well over a 1000 years ago. Our Prem Shiva Blend exclusively comes from Prithvi Attarwallahs, a respected “attar” famiy who has been making Prem Shiva oil generationally for over 200 years!
Prem Shiva Devotional Oil has a light, yet complex and layered fragrance with spicy and citric undertones. Srinath Prithviji Sr., distiller and expert of ayurvedic oils and natural medicine based out of Varanasi describes the perfume of Prem Shiva Devotional Oil as “a mixture that truly evokes the essence of Lord Shiva’s potent nature: bold, sensuous, stimulating and bewitching.”
Prem Shiva Devotional Oil falls under the category of a Night Oil. Night Oils are spiritual oils that are most effective between sunset and sunrise. Like many night oils, it has a warming and meditative nature. Prem Shiva is meant to be worn primarily as a meditational or annointing oil but can also be used as a devotional offering to Lord Shiva, his consort Goddess Parvati in all her manifestions (Uma, Durga, Kali) as well as their offspring Lord Ganesh, the Elephant Headed God, Bestower of Good Fortune and Remover of All Obstacles.
Prem Shiva is a very unique and powerful blend as it promotes the energies of five chakra houses – giving this blend an almost “powerhouse” effect. The first chakra house (root) dominates over all other chakras which are the second, third, sixth and seventh chakra houses. This “powerhouse” factor alone sets Prem Shiva apart from all other devotional oils.
Mitti Attar (Earth Attar) lends its extremely grounding effect to the oil blend. Located at the base of the spine, the first chakra or the root chakra forms our foundation. It represents the element earth, and is therefore related to our survival instincts, and to our sense of connection to our bodies and the physical plane. Ideally this chakra brings us health, prosperity, security, and dynamic presence. This is the dominating chakra house.
The second chakra, located in the abdomen, lower back, and sexual organs, is related to the element water, and to emotions and sexuality. It connects us to others through feeling, desire, sensation, and movement. Ideally this chakra brings us fluidity and grace, depth of feeling, sexual fulfilment, and the ability to accept change.
The third chakra is known as the power chakra, located in the solar plexus. It rules our personal power, will, and autonomy, as well as our metabolism. When healthy, this chakra brings us energy, effectiveness, spontaneity, and non-dominating power.
The sixth chakra is known as the brow chakra or third eye centre. It is related to the act of seeing, both physically and intuitively. As such it opens our psychic faculties and our understanding of archetypal levels. When healthy it allows us to see clearly, in effect, letting us “see the big picture.”
Finally, the seventh chakra is the crown chakra which relates to consciousness as pure awareness. It is our connection to the greater world beyond, to a timeless, spaceless place of all-knowing. When developed, this chakra brings us knowledge, wisdom, understanding, spiritual connection, and bliss.
