India Sandalwood Oil
Ethically Harvested Sandalwood traditionally distilled in copper vessels
Provenance:  Tamil Nadu State, South India

Sandalwood is one of the most celebrated trees in India.  Its exquisite fragrance has made it famous around the world, but its exalted presence in shrines and temples in Hindu and Buddhist devotional ceremonies and anointing rituals has given Sandalwood or Chandan an almost a divine status in the Indian subcontinent,

Sandalwood is a small evergreen tree with dark brown to reddish bark, green leathery leaves and small, purplish brown unscented flowers.  In fact, there is very little that is outstanding in the tree’s appearance that would call one to notice it as a specimen containing the most outstanding aromatic heartwood whose virtues have been sung for thousands of years in India.  The tree can grow under a variety of environmental conditions, but produces the finest heartwood amidst the rocky and hilly terrains of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka, the three southern states of India, where the famed “sandalwood belt” is located.  It is in this region that most of the remaining natural stands of sandalwood are to be found.

The olfactory characteristics of sandalwood are legendary.  The warm, sweet, slightly spicy precious wood notes present a melodic blend which is at once distinct, yet not overpowering.  The non-dominating fixative characteristics of the oil make it an ideal choice for creating attars - traditional Indian perfumes – as well as a wide range of other perfumes.  It has the capacity to absorb the most ethereal notes of many plant materials, enrich and enliven them, and give them back in a yet more beautiful form.  Numerous substitutes have been created for sandalwood, with disappointing results, giving us more reason to believe in the Indian saying that “sandalwood is sandalwood” and that there really is no substitute for this special wood.

According to Hindu lore, one species, Harichandan, was said to grow only in the heavens filling the Celestial Empire with its rich fragrance.  The sandalwood we see today is said to be its representative on earth and therefore considered to be very sacred.  Sandalwood paste or oil is used in the anointing of sacred idols because the fragrance is said to be the most pleasing to the gods, hence its use in unguents, incense and bases for many other fragrant oils.  Sandalwood’s cooling and soothing properties are said to direct a person’s attention towards contemplation of the mystery of life.

In the realm of ayurveda, traditional medicine from India, sandalwood oil is used extensively for treating stress, anxiety, depression, homesickness and is excellent for dispelling fear.  It is considered to be both a sedative and a tonic.  Sandalwood oil has natural properties that promote spiritual grounding and concentration, control anger and aggression and to act upon subtle emotional centers to promote compassion and openness.

Our sandalwood oil is a 3rd Extraction oil distilled through traditional methods using only ethically traded, government quota controlled sandalwood to ensure a healthy and sustainable future of this remarkable tree.

Sandalwood promotes the energies of the first, fifth and seventh chakra houses with the fifth being the dominant chakra house.

Located at the base of the spine, the first chakra or the root chakra forms our foundation.  It represents the element earth, and is therefore related to our survival instincts, and to our sense of connection to our bodies and the physical plane. Ideally this chakra brings us health, prosperity, security, and dynamic presence.

The fifth chakra located in the throat and is thus related to communication and creativity. Here we experience the world symbolically through vibration, such as the vibration of sound representing language.  This is the dominant chakra house that is promoted through this oil.

The seventh chakra is the crown chakra that relates to consciousness as pure awareness. It is our connection to the greater world beyond, to a timeless, spaceless place of all-knowing. When developed, this chakra brings us knowledge, wisdom, understanding, spiritual connection, and bliss.
