The purnakalasha is an ancient Hindu ‘vase of plenty’ symbol. It is a highly auspicious motif consisting of a vase full to the brim with foliage, flowers and fruit denoting wealth, happiness, fertility and life-force.  These lucky symbols would be carved on door frames to bring good fortune to the household.  The frame has beautiful old blue paint – a very traditional colour in Hindu households – celebrating the colour of Lord Krishna.  There are four generous shelves in the unit.

CD 034 │’The Udaipur Deco’ Teakwood Tall Cabinet

  • Details:  Antique 1930’s tall teakwood cabinet with fascinating details.  There are strong Art Deco influences visible with definite traditional Indian overtones.  Art Deco influenced pieces generally were found in wealthier households of India (especially larger cities) as there was more of an appreciation and/or exposure to Western styles due to higher education and in many cases traveling abroad.  Since this style was considered quite “exotic" for the Indians, special artisans would have been hired to create these custom-made pieces for the families and hence quite expensive.  Art Deco pieces from India are now extremely collectible around the world because only a limited number of pieces were created.   The cabinet has one shelf in the centre and is perfect for housing a television, for example, as there is ample space in the top portion of the piece.
  • Provenance:  Domestic Auction.  Udaipur, Rajasthan, Northwest India.
  • Dimensions:  43" (crown)  35" (body) x 19" (overhang) 15" (body) x  64"
